Sick of receiving mail for that guy who lived in your apartment four years ago? Or to be more specific, y our best bet is actually to hand it off to your letter carrier in person; if you drop it into a blue collection box, it might get lost in the pile without a postal worker seeing your note.

In that case, you might be suffering from "loop mail," an unfortunate side effect of USPS's automated "Intelligent Mail" barcode system. USPS prints a barcode on each piece of mail, and that barcode is specific to the destination address. Whenever the sorting system reads that barcode, it will direct mail to that address—no matter what you've written on the outside.

This process is completely automated, so once that envelope is in the hands of a letter carrier, chances are that he or she never saw the RTS note. To stop loop mail, you need to cross out the barcode at the bottom of the envelope not the one in the plastic window. This will alert the system that the mail is undeliverable and take it out of circulation. If, after all that, you're still receiving loop mail, Brennan recommends going to your local post office and asking to speak to a station manager.

Explain that you've been having a recurring problem with First-Class Mail that needs to be returned, and he or she will be able to tell you how to put a stop to it. Where you ship out an item and it just goes back and forth between two sorting facilities several times? I have a package that a buyer just contacted me about. It has literally gone back and forth 10 times between two different distribution centers. I called the post office and after a 40 minute wait, I was told an investigator would look into it, and has days to try to figure it out.

So, the reason I was given is that machines are sorting this package, and since the machine is sorting it wrong, it is repeatedly getting sorted wrong - resulting in the looping back and forth. In order to stop this- a human must be made aware of this- and manually remove this from the sort and process it properly. In my case, it required issuing a lost mail search, and then they are able to track down the package and remove it from the cycle, preventing it from looping over and over.

First I had to open a case, and then after 3 -5 days they would let me escalate it to a lost mail recovery case. It was this final action that resulted in it being found and delivered. They will ask you where you want it to go if they find it. If you have refunded already you may want it returned- or you may wish to have it delivered anyhow. If you are already outside the amazon delivery time frame your options on asking the buyer to wait on the outcome may be limited.

This one started in California and being shipping to Washington November 1, In Transit to Next Facility Your package will arrive later than expected, but is still on its way.

It is currently in transit to the next facility. My guess would be that someone misprinted the little sorting bar code on it and is stuck in a loop going through machines until someone figures it out and uses a sharpie to mark out the sorting code.

Yeah I have had that happen a couple of times Second thought on this. I cannot think of a single instance where the competitors package got stuck in a do loop.

In fact, I have had only one instance of non-delivery in three years. I stopped by the post office yesterday to show them the transition list generated from my tracking number but PO clerk said there is nothing they can do except I have to wait for the package to arrive at the destination which who knows when. It is unbelievable that a nicely printed out label from eBay with visible bar code can be in such a mess.

Now, I've never tried it with a package that is still moving, but they do seem to always be able to find them when they actually are forced to look. I had to call and they had to fix the shipping label. On some legs of the trip, a package is scanned as going into a particular container, after which the container is scanned, not the package itself. Until the package itself is seen again coming out of the container or at some point further ontracking will continue to follow the container on its later travels which is why so many of these stories involve a mysterious back-and-forth travel loop.
